Alejandro

You have a very cool drawing style starting to develop, Alejandro!! Your looser, stylized sketches have a lot of life to them. And then you're able to tighten your line work to pull together accurate proportions, as in the body and wings in your final drawing of the dragonfly. You're gaining more and more control in your contour lines (lines that show the edges of things), especially in the details of the dragonfly's tail and legs. The study sketches of the egret show that you're starting to match what your eye sees to what you draw--keep practicing, man!

Brandon

Welcome to the Community Day Sketchers, Brandon!!! Great start in drawing with lines and shapes. As you got used to holding your pencil on its side you gained more control of your line work! Excellent job in drawing the proportions (sizes of shapes compared to other shapes) of the crab and puffer fish. Nice facial expression on the fish! I can see a BIG improvement in your eye for proportions and detail in you sketch of the toucan. And your sketch of the egret shows a lot more confidence in your line work and shading as you stepped into drawing realistically. Keep practicing drawing light guidelines for the shapes of things; then finishing with darker outlines and contour lines (lines that show the outside edges of the egret).

Brian

As I told you during class, the tail of this dragonfly shows a REALLY cool drawing style, Brian!! I hope you continue to develop your line work and bold drawing style. Overall, the proportions of the body and wings are very accurately drawn. I think you had some cool detail work happening on the egret's feathers, but you covered it up with the dark shading over the body. You got a great start at sketching the 's' curve of the neck and details of the face and beak.

Anthony

Great job in using positive and negative space to see the form of the egret and draw the contour edges of its body and head. The proportions of its body are well drawn. The 's' curve of the neck and curve of the 'shoulder' area are especially well drawn. I really like the natural-looking contour edges of the head and beak. Nice job of stepping into drawing realistically, Anthony!

Jamal

Nice to have you drop in for an hour and do some sketching, Jamal!! Drawing with the pencil on its side was a challenge, but you gained confidence in your line work as you drew the shape and details of the puffer fish. Accuracy in drawing proportions (sizes of shapes compared to other shapes) really started to show in your sketch of the toucan, especially in the larger version! Nice job in adding lighter and darker tones to your composition. Keep drawing, man!

Student Drawing Show 2010 Deadline Has Been Extended!

Because of testing, the deadline to submit your drawings is the week of May 10-14. Enter your work in our Online Student Show, opening May 18, 2010. Your drawings will be featured with students from other schools in the Drawing League Gallery. Choose 2 of your favorites, either from your lesson drawings or work you've created during your own time at school. One drawing is to be from observation (drawing things you're looking at) and the second drawing is to be from your imagination. For Details: Click here

We'll more about the show in class, this Wednesday.
